Returning from Africa - a Quick update

Ingoni Everyone,

   This is Actually Jonathan here after spending six months in Borongole, South Sudan! I am so blessed and cannot begin to summarize all the amazing things that God is doing on the ground. In these past months I have seen:

~lives changed for Christ, 

~the Church and our leadership on the ground stand firm in the face of rumors of war and people running to Uganda

~multiple couples repenting and desiring to go about marriage in a Godly way,

~numerous varieties of vegetables, grains, and fruit trees planted in our farmland,

~walls rising out of what was once wilderness and will soon become the homestead in Beth Israel Farmland,

~an equipped ambulance operating out of our clinic, which has been saving lives through hospital transportation,

~the South Sudanese military turning to God and asking for His blessing and peace as they fulfill their duties,

~Our radio station (Nehemiah Trumpet Call 97.3) received an increase of power and an extended broadcasting range,

~discipleship going forward in lives of the families in our community,

   Thank you so much for your support of the mission and all of us on the ground in so many ways. All of you gave from your hearts and supported us so much, especially in prayer. Thank you so much and Rubanga koco tutu nya ruga(God bless you)!

    This is just a short glimpse of many things which God did since December of 2014. There is even more that I didn't include and will be sharing as time allows. You can look forward to more detailed updates and testimonies in the weeks to come.

     I will be here on the States side until October and am looking for opportunities to travel and share a first hand account in person. Please let me know if you would be interested in my family and I coming to your church, home, or another venue to share of God's hand in South Sudan.

Some wonderful weekly phone conversations w/ Jon in South Sudan

                                 

We've had some wonderful weekly phone conversations with Jon,  since Verizon changed its overseas long distance to $20 for 1000 free minutes per month!! Certainly God's provision for us!!  Overall he's doing well.   Each time we talk, he says he’s had some tough times & struggles, but even the struggles God has used for good. Here are some snippets of conversation with Jon over the past weeks…

• With heightened concerns because of the rumors of war and soldiers in the area, Jon said they have been gathering more often to pray as a family and as a community!!!!!

• With soldiers encamped nearby, they were hindered from going to the Farmland (5 miles away) to harvest.  But one day the soldiers asked to borrow the dump truck to go to the there and instead of just loaning it, they took them there with a bunch of men from the village (Jon included) so they we able to harvest much to bring back. He said "It was an amazing day!"

• Jon has communicated that he sees the great need of a farmhouse on the farmland to monitor the work, to cut down on time wasted going the 5 miles to and from the farm, & to keep the produce safe from fire and others. Thus please keep the Farmhouse Project in your prayers. The brick production has been halted due to lack of needed materials, [William said: The hold up on brick production directed them to begin the        work on the Farmhouse with the bricks they have produced. First leveling the area and transporting bricks to start the foundation.] 

• Jon's been keeping busy and is just really “doing life with the people" and is "becoming a part of the community". His Madi (language) is improving and he is able to "understand some of the jokes & laugh with the people" 

• Recently, all the soldiers pulled out of the area and before leaving they thanked those in the village for their support. The village gave them needed medicines, and the soldiers had asked for bibles.  They were given solar radios tuned into the Gospel radio station and the last thing they gave the commander was a copy of William's book, THE BIBLE OR THE AXE, which validates all they have said about being a support to the government and the country for over the past 20 years!! Trusting the interactions with the soldiers has, by God's gracious Spirit, had a much greater impact than we could hope for.

• One Sunday Jon went to visit their sister church for service (an hours walk away). He was asked to share something with the people at church, but was not prepared. Later, he agreed to share from a scripture he had looked at in the morning Jer 9:23-24. 

 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

His thoughts that morning were realizing that those verses were a promise of God offering Himself to the people in the midst of their idolatry & sin. When he began to share at the service, he said "it was as if I had an outline".  He shared about his own struggles with idols of exercise and how  "I glory in my own strength & God uses typhoid and malaria to show me He is my strength."  God so ministered to Him as he shared, he said it brought him to tears. The day before he wrestled with condemnation and God came through and forgave him and loved him. I cried to hear this.   Thank you for remembering him in your prayers. God our, Good Shepherd is taking care of Jon beautifully.

For the past year Pastor Michael and the others from the village keep asking when we are coming & that they have been  praying for us to come.  For people who use to think money grows on trees here... they did not understand that we must wait on the Lord as they do.  Jon says he so looks forward to having us there and gets choked at the thought.... so do I!

Thank you for your prayers. We just found out this week that we will be departing for South Sudan with the Levi’s on April 7th, Lord willing.   So both families need your prayers, trusting the Lord to provide all we need in the next 6 weeks. Trying not to be overwhelmed & take it one day at a time.   Asking Him to order our steps here and the work that must be done on the ground according to His priorities, through His timely provision, and equipping.

Dec 2014 Update from the field in South Sudan

We’ve talked to Jon a few times by phone [only way we can reach him as there is no internet or mail system]. He is doing well & it has been so wonderful to hear about his Christmas, that consisted of celebrating at church, walking from hut to hut visiting with others and enjoying a meal of fresh beef (a treat for special occasions) & African (white) sweet potato.  He said he missed hearing the familiar carols, so he sang everyone he could think of at the top of his lungs!!

There have been rumors that are tempting people to flee since the end of November, but Operation Nehemiah's radio station is being used to encourage the people to REMEMBER how God called them back to this land in 2004, even before the cease fire in 2005; to REMEMBER how faithful God has been; and all He has done, & to resist the temptation to cut & run, but instead to stand their ground. The people in Madi Corridor are strategically & providentially placed by God right at the entrance of the Nile Valley into South Sudan from Uganda for a reason.  

The Gospel message has taken a hold there over the past 10 years as Nehemiah Trumpet Call 97.3 FM Gospel radio station has broadcasted there.  The people in the region have received the Gospel; understood the consequences of war; are level-headed; & will not be dragged into any schemes of rebellion instigated by some few disgruntled tribal warlords without vision. For a month now there have been rumors of war breaking out any day, still nothing  has transpired… the battle is with fear of what may happen, but the people are beginning to figure out that they have nothing to fear, but fear itself, for He is Emmanuel, God with us.   It has been so pivotal to have Nehemiah Trumpet Call 97.3 radio to encourage the people to stand therefore against fear that would cause them to flee and lose the ground God has given them.  In addition vital health information is shared on the air, such as information about water borne diseases,etc. taught on the radio by our health staff.   Local government officials use the station  to spread  critical security  information to the community.  We are currently raising the funds to set up a shortwave station to reach the entire Horn of Africa. 

Field director, Timothy, on the ground said that William’s 10 day visit to the village with his 12 year old daughter at a time when daily rumors of war were being spread, really meant a lot to the people in Borongole, because they did not have to come. He also said that leaving Jonathan there at a time when most westerners would be tempted to leave has strengthened their resolve to stay where God has called them. This really gripped our hearts and has brought us great joy!

Pray with us for the year ahead that God would supply all that is needed for us to continue to communicate the vision, via internet, snail mail (sending updates to those who do not have email), travel to conferences and wherever folks invite us to speak.  Roger & I are available to come to your home or church to share with a slide show the pictures of life in Borongole, South Sudan.

We are seriously praying about going over to South Sudan ourselves this spring during Jonathan’s 6 month stay.  It will be a miracle, but we have seen miracle after miracle of God’s provision!!! More to share in our next update. See some of the current needs below.

Leaving for Africa on December 8th!!!

Greetings and giving thanks for all that God is doing! Many reasons to PRAISE our God and to PRAY to see Him provide as the countdown begins.

PRAISE God with us for:

Everywhere that I have had the opportunity to share, the face of little Wani would come to mind. You may remember the little boy whose family couldn't afford to get his illness diagnosed. He was treated for malaria, but my little friend died a few days later from Yellow Fever.... a curable disease. The goal for my family's previous trip was to raise the funds for re-opening and equipping of our free medical clinic. I am praising God that the entire $5000 was provided to reopen our MEDICAL CLINIC with needed medicines & supplies. 

The money has been sent to our ground team and they are so excited to once again give FREE medical care to our village and the surrounding community. Our Field Director in South Sudan, TImothy Levi wrote:
"now after learning that, you have managed to raise funds amounting to $5000 for clearing out people tears in doubt or worries health wise, we are all delighted for that because making this health department operational or functional shall provide enough strength  and hope for many, MAY THE GLORY BE TO LORD."

The ministry has just received a donation of a complete DENTAL OFFICE to be shipped over in the spring of 2015. This can be set up in the village and a dentist from another area could come periodically to serve the people until someone in the village can be trained in dentistry.

As Assistant Coordinator for Sustainable Development, my primary focus will be to help to BUILD A FARMHOUSE at the Beth Israel Farmland

William Levi shares about The Beth Israel Farmhouse Project : 

"The time has finally come to build a home & storage warehouse in the Beth Israel farmland beginning in the later part of 2014! Our vision is to be able to accommodate both our family & an additional 3 - 4 families, including missionaries, visitors, & the families of our ground staff to allow for full time engagement in farm operations. Please keep this exciting development in prayer.

I will be leaving for South Sudan with my eldest daughter, Abijah, & Jonathan Lueken on Dec. 8th for 10 days. Mr. Lueken will be staying in the field for six months. The scope of this shorter trip is to hold a two day leadership training with the church & to begin construction of the Beth Israel farmhouse. Hannah & five of our children will not be joining us this time because of the short duration of this trip.  We plan to travel back as a family in March 2015 for 2-3 months.

I will be working alongside my adopted brothers to build the farmhouse, which is 5 miles on a bush road from the village. Thus far we have had to trek by foot, tractor, or other vehicle back and forth each day because there is no housing there on the farm, thus the need for the farmhouse. I recently spoke with a seasoned traveller to Africa. He suggested I get a Paratrooper Folding Bike that I could take on the plane and a jungle hammock with mosquito netting & rain protection. This hammock would be my housing during the construction away from the village, so I could stay overnight out in the bush for a longer time.

So far, God has provided enough for Jon my round trip airfare, immunizations, some of the needed food & supplies, but there are some things that we are still praying in. 

PRAY for provision of:

~ Additional food & supplies & travel expenses. $500 needed for a 6 month stay… 

DEC. 8 to May 28, 2015

~Funds needed for the extra checked bags on the plane that are filled with donations of clothing, sewing, school & first aid supplies. PRAY for the $400 needed for extra bag fees, or better, yet, for favor with the authorities that they wave the fee.

~ A Hennesey Deep Jungle Asym HAMMOCK (with mosquito netting & extra thick bottom that does not allow mosquito’s to bite through the bottom of the hammock)

~ A Montague Paratrooper Pro Folding Bike - that I can take on the plane. Someone suggested that I contact Montague Biles in Boston, asking if they would discount  or donate a bike if we give pictures and report back of its usefulness in South Sudan. Regular price $945. Pray they call us back. 

~ I  am also finishing an audio recording for THE BIBLE OR THE AXE, the story of William Levi's escape from  Sudan. Not sure how many Cd’s will need to be purchased for each copy of the book, but hope to share it with others. Such as, elderly folks who cannot read, for family’s to listen to, and to air on Nehemiah Trumpet Call Radio Station in Borongole, South Sudan!

Heading Home to Africa!! A praise report and prayer needs.

   I am very excited to share with you a great blessing I received not too long ago. Some of you may have heard already if you have been on Facebook, but for the rest here it goes…

     

     Initially, I was quoted $650 for a one way ticket which is a good deal, but that deal fell through over the weekend. The travel agent called me on Tuesday to let me know the the one way ticket had gone up to $1100! This was a lot more than I usually pay. I was beginning to agonize over losing a good airfare, when the agent said she would look into the cost of a round trip ticket. To my surprise and great joy, it was the exact same price, $1100, for a round trip ticket! (my cheapest two way ticket to date had been $1250.)

    On Tuesday I was able to purchase my airfare for my 6 month trip to Africa! God is so good and I will be heading across the Atlantic December 8th! I am so excited to see my African family again and work alongside them. 

   My main tasks will be:

 ~Building the Beth Israel Farm house, enabling William Levi's family to have a permanent home in the farmland when they make their yearly trip in February. The building will be large enough to accommodate additional families who want to visit, as well as, storage for the equipment, and produce for our farming operations. Currently, there is no housing or storage on the farm which is 5 miles from the village.

~Working along side the people as they cultivate and farm during the rainy season beginning in late March.

~Continue to preach on the radio as often as I am available.

~Live with and do life with my adopted family and the people of Borongole, South Sudan.

Homeward Perigrinations : Part 3 - A final pictorial update from the Lueken's

Perigrinations? Jon's favorite word which means to travel from one place to another, a course of travel.

The last week of our trip (Oct. 11 - 18) eastward was spent with dear friends with no speaking engagements planned ahead. But, God kindly rounded out our trip with several opportunities to casually share stories and pictures with handfuls of folks in our friend’s living rooms. We enjoyed sweet fellowship, catching up, and even did some sight seeing!

As we look back on this trip, we are so thankful for the grace of God poured out to make this month, long trip not only possible, but a joy!  There was so much that was not set in stone or planned out ahead, but, whenever we had a need, He provided at the perfect time. Daily we could see His hand guiding, providing, orchestrating, and knitting our hearts with others.  It’s what He does in our midst that is profoundly needed, felt and lasting.  So we praise Him & are overwhelmed by what we can see and thank Him for all that we cannot see!

  We look forward to reconnect with those that we met when we do another future trip & 

we want to continue to share in New England 

among friends and churches here.

Our zig zag through Missouri, Part 2: A pictorial update from the Lueken Family

Ingoni!(Hello!)

There's so much that we can't see in the days ahead, but what we have seen God do on this trip has been overwhelming and has far surpassed our expectations in many ways, especially in rekindling relationships and building new ones. We arrived home this past weekend and thank God for His grace that carried us. 

We did not have much internet the last week so this is one of two updates about the last few weeks of our travels.

Oct. 1 - We dropped from MN to Kansas City, MO.  Stayed with new friends, the Pentimone’s. What a blessings to get to know their family.  Thankful to stay so close to the Family Economics Conference where we had a vendor booth to share about Operation Nehemiah.  What a wonderful time connecting with others from all over the country over that 3 days. 

There we got our first donation toward the medical clinic from a young boy of about 8 years old!! 

Thank you to the Pentimone's, who welcomed us into their home, so we could have a table at a conference in Kansas City, MO

Oct. 4 - traveled east to St. Louis, MO where we were to stay with my niece Bekah Thomas's family in one of the vacant apartments they are working on.  But an inquiry through A CANDLE IN THE WINDOW Hospitality Network, we got to stay 3 1/2 miles away with a dear new friend in the Lord for all 4 days!  Thank you, Sandie!!!

Jon shared at the Church of the Word, and it happened to be the weekend all our dear Thomases AND Robert & Jill Andrews were in attendance.  What a great audience! Pastor Matt Sheffer’s message was full of light to our souls bringing welcome conviction and hope in our Savior alone.

Though this was not a sight seeing trip, we could not pass up a visit to the St. Louis Zoo when it was free and we got to be with Bekah & her boys!

Blessed reunions with our dear Thomases in St. Louis, MO

Oct. 8 - 11 travelled westward again toward Springfield, MO to meet our friends, Melissa & Jordan for dinner and to share at their church... We ended up with FOUR opportunities to share in 4 days and had wonderful times of fellowship. God used our visit to connect us with dear folks from their area & to give us wise & proven counsel concerning Roger's health issues. 

An added blessing is that the day after we left, little Marian broken out in a rash which proved she was contagious while we were there.  Since returning home we have not had contact with family on either side in order to prevent sharing this with other.  A blessing? you ask! Yes, we have so much ministry follow up to do in the days ahead, that having these focused days is a real gift. God knew.

Oct. 11 - We traveled east to TN ... (to be continued in part 3 of our updates)…

As we look ahead, we are still praying about raising monthly support… We are hoping and praying that as folks we know support us even $10 or $25 a month, that the majority of the money raised as we share at churches and in homes will go toward the needs in South Sudan,  so far we have about $450 per month.

We raised $500 for the Medical Clinic, $4500 more is needed to order the rapid diagnostic tests and treatment so that it can be re-open to serve the people. A recent inquiry about the medical clinic from someone we met a few weeks ago, gives us hope that God can move on hearts, far better than we can to fund this need.

Jon also has part of his travel expenses for his next trip to South Sudan which is slated for the end of November or early December and he may stay for 6 months!! 

We are available to share in your home or church in New England, just as we had done on this trip…
